Taylor Thomas Course 2 Unit 1

Chapter 2

Knowing your students likes, dislikes, and ability levels is essential in creating successful learning experiences for your students. When you know where your students are academically, you meet them there and progress forward. Knowing the interests of your students allows you to make learning meaningful and relevant. You also create relationships with your students as well as a safe and comfortable learning environment. Awareness of these components provides the most influential and successful educational opportunities for all students.

Creating and implementing a PBL unit provides a common experience for all students. Knowing the five W’s of your students allows you to create units tailored to your class. This includes differentiating where necessary, providing cross disciplinary components, and modifying along the way to best enhance your PBL instruction.

Chapter 3

Ways to enhance:
  • ·         Create stations around the room
  • ·         Student work will be displayed
  • ·         Theme based decorations (fun and functional)
  • ·         Non-fiction books and information displayed

·
Wish list:
  • ·         More time
  • ·         Tables instead of desks (I make groups by moving desks together, students can also move desks as needed for partner or group work)
  • ·         Money for supplies

  1. I totally agree with you on your thoughts about knowing your student. Our wish list for our classrooms are the same! I wish I would have remembered to put more money on my wish list.

  2. Hi Taylor,
I appreciate your thoughts on Chapter 2 and 3 and am glad that you agree that knowing our students' specific interests and abilities helps us to revise our instructional plans to ensure that it connects with our students and provides relevancy. You shard how you want to create stations around the room and provide both fun and functional displays. I want to share with you all an example of PBL Project Board that you can use to provide a focus for students on what the pbl project is that includes the driving question, a calendar of the timeline for major events and due dates, need to knows, as well as any websites students' need to access.
You also shared how you would like tables instead of desks. I have seen where many elementary school classrooms have switched out desks for tables. I would ask your administration about this possibility for you.

    Sincerely,
    Dawn

  3. Taylor,
I completely agree with you about tables. I love the flexbility that tables provide rather than desks. Allowing for flexible seating really opens up the door to great collaboration. One teacher in the building has redesigned her classroom for flexible seating. She has some desks, a large table, small table, couch area, even a large pallet on the floor. The teacher has students signed up for each day the area they want and they cannot have them back to back. It is a really cool set up and she did it for 50.00!

  4. Taylor,
Your wish list looks exactly like what many in our class desire also. Tables would be nice and so would extra money for supplies. I am extremely thankful that we have been given more time to complete this first PBL. That wish was granted.
Working on a PBL with a group of students will definitely build a closer relationship with them. The students need a safe and comfortable place to work. They will be so motivated to create a top notch product that they will eagerly give their all.
