Clark H. Maxwell Blog #3

1)  Well, obviously a big problem would be a group member slacking and not pulling their own weight.  Another problem would be a group member charging ahead and not communicating things to the other group members.
2) Group contracts hold people accountable.  You have clear and defined roles and expectations within the group, and no one is above or below other group members.  Kind of like the loan you sign on your house.  There are defined payments that must be made every month that you adhere to or there are consequences.
3) The strength and weaknesses of each member, as well contact information.  Once again, clear and defined rules, expectations, and consequences that keep each member honest.  It is best if the student groups come up with their own contracts.

1) The value in assessing roles within the group is that it develops their team working skills.  Not all students naturally have that skill.
2) Mr. Jupp asks the students questions about their jobs.  What are they working on?  Why are you doing this?  This also helps to hold them accountable and also keeps them on task.  He told one group that they were on the right track, but reminded the group leader that he has to make sure everything was right because that was his job.  He kind of helped them, but at the same time they were helping themselves.
3) Peer assessment also holds each member accountable for project content.  The group gets the grade, not just one person.  I think it would make group members want to do their best possible work to not let the team down.  Also, the assessment expectations that were talked about gives them criteria that they must meet.  This puts everything in their hands regarding learning and also the grade.

I think the Profile of a South Carolina graduate is right on with what we need in today's society.  Being able to work together, solve problems that come up, and communicate effectively is something that has been lost in recent years.  In just about any job you are going to be working with people, unless you are the only employee.  Technology plays such a huge role in everyday life now, so knowing how to use is to your advantage is a must.  Being creative and knowing how to learn are also important because it allows you to take ownership of what you learned.  Self learning is something that you don't forget.   PBL uses all of these things.  Hopefully it will continue to help kids become productive people

  1. Hi Clark,
I really enjoyed the insights you provided in your video clip reflections. You shared how group contracts are like a contract on a home loan. Everyone agrees to the terms listed or the contract is dissolved and there are consequences that result. That is a great analogy. I also agree that peer feedback does provide incentives for students to do their best work.

    Sincerely,
    Dawn

  2. I have used peer assessments in my classroom but not really in grading. I really need to use these reflections as part of the final grade. I guess the scare is how does a teacher take student evaluations and apply some of the assessment as part of the students final grade. I guess we could add it to the student generated rubric. I have thought about using a elf evaluation as part of the grade but what I have noticed is that students either rate themselves very high even when they have contributed very little or student in the middle or those who did most of the work will say they deserve a B and underestimate their value. Peer assessment is really a soft skill because when we can be honest with understanding our contribution to an assignment we grown as learners and as a person.
