Jeneane Allgood--Day 3 hw

Response to Video #1
1. Problems students might encounter when working in a group might include some members not "pulling their weight" (doing their part), what you do when someone is absent (which inevitably always happens), and how to make decisions as a group (vote, etc.).
2. Contracts are designed to mitigate these problems because if everyone agrees to the contract, then everyone is made aware of expectations ahead of time and they are held to the same standards as everyone else.
3. As far as checks and balances, the teacher needs to be made aware if someone has violated part of the contract, and deal with the situation appropriately. In the video, they had a 3-step process for dealing with contract violations. The first step involved a warning and talking to the student about what led to them violating the contract, while the 3rd violation resulting in them being "fired" from the group and having to complete the 4-person project on their own.

How does PBL and collaborative group work fit the criteria of the profile of a SC graduate?
The qualities of a SC graduate that PBL and collaborative group work most help with are interpersonal skills, integrity, critical-thinking, self-direction, and collaboration and teamwork (in addition to learning about rigorous standards).

  1. Hi Jeneane,
I am glad that you were able to see how effective student contracts and introduction and modeling of them can help mitigate common problems with collaborative work.
