Clark H. Maxwell Blog #2

1.) The two concepts are so similar that they are almost carbon copies, just worded a little different.  Look at article and the essential checklist side by side and you'll see it.  I did not learn this way, but it seems great.  When you break it down it is really teaching backwards, to me anyway.  Instead of learning the material then doing a project.  You start the project, then learn the material as you go.

2).  I will make the project pitch early in the semester after the first round of FitnessGram testing.  We have regular fitness classes, that may help them in coming up with ideas that they will use in their project.  Need to know information will come in the first few minutes of class.

3)  I do not think that there is anything that would keep me from doing this in my class.  Our school is a STEAM school, so they kind of go together.  If there is one thing it would be having more class time.  Doing this and regular PE with as little loss of activity time as possible would be the goal for our PE staff.

4)  Be honest with them and tell them how this will, hopefully, affect our student's health and well being.  Our administration at FMS is all-in on PBL and STEAM, support is not an issue.  I don't think anyone at FMS would have reservations about getting our kids exercising and healthier.  If the do, that's on them.

  1. Hi Clark,
I am glad that you have support for your pbl unit at FMS and that the school has created a culture that fosters student inquiry and application of learning. I am also glad that you are able to implement your pbl unit early in the semester after FitnessGram testing so your students will have practice applying 21st Century Skills such as collaboration that will help support the pbl units they are doing in their other classes.

    Thanks,
    Dawn

  2. I find it refreshing that you are branching out and providing your students with a chance to participate with PBL within your content area. This is such a great way to provide support for your teammates and to open up your curriculum to new possiblilies.
